Three new teams were admitted to the league while Motlow’s Joe Daves was selected as eastern division coach of the year and Albert Thornton was named to the eastern division team during the spring meeting of the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association Friday at Motlow.
The new teams joining the conference are Aquinas Junior College of Nashville and Volunteer State of Gallatin to the western division. Roane State of Harriman was tabbed for the eastern division.
Hoyt Kirk of Freed-Hardeman was named coach of the year in the western division.
Named to the eastern division team are Jim Meadows, Cleveland State; Jerome Brown, Morristown; John Higdon, Hiwassee; Vernon Short, Cumberland and Thornton.
The western division team includes Harold Corlew and Freddie Petway, Columbia State; Greg Reese, Martin; Barry Stephenson, Dyersburg; and Garry Grisham, Jackson State.
Meadows was chosen as the eastern’s division’s most valuable player while the honor in the eastern division went to Reese of Martin.
Joe Crabtree, coach at Cleveland State, was elected president for the coming season, while Coach Daves was named Vice President. Don Jenkins of Hilwassee is the new secretary treasurer and Kermit Smith of Martin returns as sports information director of the conference.
The new additions will bring the western division to seven teams, Columbia State, Martin, Dyersburg, Jackson. Freed-Hardsmann, Volunteer State and Aquinas.
In the Eastern Division will be Motlow, Cleveland, Morristown, Hiwassee, Cumberland and Roane State.
The school will begin league competition this fall.
Trophies were presented in Columbia for winning TJCAA basketball title this season. Motlow won runnerup trophy.
