Women’s Head Basketball Coach . . . . . . .Karen Serra As the Lady Bucks prepare for the upcoming season, sixth-year head coach Karen Serra welcomes a host of new players to the 2002-2003 women’s squad. This year’s team consists of 16 players, eight returning sophomores, one transfer, two red-shirt freshmen, and five true freshmen. This team should mature quickly under the leadership of Lora Cotten who was named to the All-Eastern Conference team last year. The Lady Bucks will attempts to replace three quality sophomores who have moved on to the next level. Among them were Monique Alsup and Angela Garrett who were also named to the All-Eastern Conference team, with Monique being chosen as Player of the Year. This group compiled a record of 21-6, the second best in Motlow College history. When the Lady Bucks take the floor on Nov. 1, Serra will begin her 17th year of coaching. She began her career in 1986 in her hometown of Waverly, Tenn., and has coached at various levels within the mid-state area before coming to Motlow. As Head coach at Motlow, Serra stresses the importance of academics and has an academic program in place to ensure that each student-athlete in the program receives adequate assistance in obtaining a degree. Serra holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She and husband Johnny currently live in Murfreesboro. Helping Serra is fifth year assistant coach Lenora Word, who concentrates on guard development and recruiting. Also contributing to the coaching staff is second-year student Jeremy Jean who is responsible for post development. Men’s Head of Basketball Coach . . . . . . . . Jeff Johnson The Motlow Bucks are under direction of a new head coach, Jeff Johnson. Johnson comes to Motlow from Angelo State University in Texas, where he was assistant coach for the men’s basketball program. While at ASU, the university became one of the power institutions in the Lone Star Conference basketball ranks. He received a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s degree in administration and health from Northwest Missouri State University. While a student, he played four seasons of basketball as a guard and small forward, and as a graduate assistant coach, helped guide Northwest to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship and an appearance in the NCAA national tournament. Johnson also was an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College, has taught secondary health, physical education and kinesiology, and is a former boys’ basketball and track coach at Lee’s Summit Schools District. In addition to his coaching duties at Motlow, he will teach physical education classes. “I am really excited about both the challenge and the opportunity presented to me here at Motlow College,” Johnson said. “I am taking over one of the most successful programs in the country and look forward to its continued success. With the season quickly approaching, the anticipation and excitement about the season grows. We have a good pool of talent to carry us through the year. The people at Motlow have welcomed me with open arms, and that has made all the difference in the world. You can be the best coach in the world, but if you aren’t surrounded by good, supportive people, you will not have success.” Motlow College is an AA/EEO institution.
