Gary Barfield ———— Head Softball Coach
The Motlow College Lady Bucks are led by fourth-year head coach Gary Barfield. Coach Barfield is a native of Tullahoma and an alumnus of Motlow College where he played baseball in 1990. He continued his baseball career at the University of Tennessee at Martin where he served as team captain. Prior to becoming head softball coach, Coach Barfield served as an assistant baseball coach at Motlow under Don Rhoton for two years. He resides in Tullahoma with his wife, Tracy and two daughters, Alyssa and Katelyn.
In 2000, the Lady Bucks posted a school record of 43 wins, breaking the mark set the previous season. The Lady Bucks’ overall record was 43-13 (conference record 17-3) and finished second in the state and region tournaments. Coach Barfield won his 100th game during the 2000 campaign. His three-year record is 112-45.
The 2000 sophomores broke seven career offensive records, and the 2000 team broke three single-season offensive categories. Jo Sharp was a first team All-American and broke the school record of homeruns with 20, RBIs with 65, and runs scored with 69. Ame Clapsaddle, Jo Sharp, Dawn Fox, and Nikki Shockley all received post-season honors. This team also broke the school record for homeruns with 66 in 56 games.
Coach Barfield is excited about the 2001 team which returns an outstanding sophomore class including Nikki Shockley (.433 avg., 62 RBIs, 17 HRs); Dawn Fox (24-4 record, 1.66 ERA, 119 SO, .289 avg., 3 HRs); Amanda Washer (.411 avg., 36 RBIs, 10 HRs); Teri Winton (.338 avg., 21 RBIs, 3 HRs); Amanda Potuk (.301 avg., 4 HRs, 15 SBs); and Jessie Baker (.239 avg.). The highly toured freshman class includes Coffee County graduates Nicole McGrew and Keith Finney; Marion County alumnus Christi Hampton; Lincoln County graduate Meri-Leigh Keith; Franklin County graduate Amy Taylor; Oak Ridge graduate Lisa Shipley; Cornersville graduate Emily Polly; and DeKalb County graduate Jennifer Hampton.
The 2001 softball schedule includes a number of Top 20 teams, and the opening season tournament in Meridian, MS, will be one of the top tournaments in the country.

The Tullahoma News, May 10, 2000
After playing eight straight hours, battling back from the losers’ bracket Monday, Motlow’s Lady Bucks’ softball season came to an end with a 4-3 loss to Chattanooga State in the TJCCAA Region VII championship game.
Culminating a 4-2 tournament and a record- breaking 43-13 season, the Lady Bucks finished second in the state for the second time in three years.
“I’ve never seen a group of athletes play harder,” Motlow coach Gary Barfield said. “I’ve never been prouder of a team than I was (Monday)... they showed more heart and more character than any team I’ve been around.”
Motlow Started the tournament like gangbursters Saturday, defeating Jackson State 8-0. Sunday, Motlow vanquished Volunteer State 10-6 before falling 8-0 to Chattanooga later in the day.
From the losers’ bracket Monday, Motlow beat Vol State again 9-1 and Chattanooga 6-5 before falling to the

Several of Barfield’s players were recognized for outstanding play, for the season, and the tournament.
Sophomore shortstop Casundra (Jo Jo) Sharp was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament after belting four home runs to boost her season mark to a school-record 20. Sharp was also named All-TJCCAA East, All-State and Barfield said Shart has a good shot at being named All-American.
Fox, Sharp, and Clapsaddle were joined on the All-East team by Lincoln County freshman Nikki Shockley, who pounded out 17 home runs, second-best behind Sharp.

Don Rhoton ———— Head Baseball Coach
Don Rhoton, who also serves as an athletic director, begins his 13th season as head baseball coach. Coach Rhoton, a native of Franklin County, spent 14 years as baseball coach at Franklin County High School before coming to Motlow College in 1989. He now lives in Tullahoma with wife Donna, a teacher at Farrar Elementary School.
Rhoton and the Bucks are coming off the most successful season in Motlow baseball history. They won the Eastern Division Championship for the seventh consecutive year. The Bucks also won the state and region for the second time in three years and the District Championship.
These championships were topped off by the first ever appearance in the National JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. The Bucks made a tremendous showing by finishing as the number two team in the nation after losing the national championship game to a Graysden, Texas team.
All of the sophomores will be sorely missed. Among those are Joshua Arteage (nine individual and team records, second team All-American, and World Series All-Tournament), Joel Navarro (third team All-American), and Brad Basham (most career wins).
This year’s team will be led by a veteran pitching staff of Rocky Evans (12-1, pre-season All-American), and David Perry (7-4, 4.16 ERA).
The 2001 schedule is the most aggressive ever. It will feature Volunteer State (last year’s number one team); Itawamba (pre-season number one in the country); nationally-ranked Wallace State, Bevill State, and N.W. Shoals; and Briarcliffe, NY World Series participant and preseason rank of number 10.

Motlow’s Coach Rhoton Receives Double Honors

Don Rhoton, coach of the Motlow College Bucks baseball team, was doubly honored on Jan. 4 during ceremonies at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville.
Rhoton, who lives in Tullahoma, received awards naming him the American Baseball Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year and the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association’s Junior College Coach of the Year.
Although Rhoton is pleased to be so honored, he gives credit to the players.

“I think receiving these awards is much more a reflection of our program rather than an individual,” he said. “When your team and players are successful, then naturally awards like this come to the person in charge, but if you get right down to it, good players make someone into a good coach real quick. Everything should be pointed towards the players and assistant coaches, because that’s what makes it happen.”
