Motlow Library Addition Will Double Book Space

(EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the 12th in a series of articles about Motlow College, which will begin its sixth academic year Sept. 23).

By ALYCE KOZMA

For those of us to whom the words library brings back memories of “Shhh, Quiet Please,” and dark musky rooms filled with volumes of books that are hard to find, the Motlow Library is a pleasant experience. There are none of those “Quiet Please” posters, and although the library is a quiet place, soft discussions take place as students search through the well-lighted stacks for the books they need, or as they place a film strip in an audio-visual carrel. The Motlow Library contains almost 23,000 volumes, having met the minimum standards of the Southern Library Association before the end of the last fiscal year. In addition, the library features a collection of film strips, motion pictures, audio tapes, film loops, slides, microfilm, and movies. The library subscribes to more than 200 periodicals, and the microfilm strips alone total over 1000. Information on other colleges and universities and on career opportunities are also available to Motlow students, and when a new 12,000-square-foot, $353,945 addition doubling library space is completed later this quarter, the library will be able to greatly expand its services to students. The addition will increase the storage and office space for audio-visual materials more than five times.

Book Collection Growing

Mrs. Warren L. Broemel, head librarian, said Motlow’s collection of books has been growing at a rapid rate. Last June, the library contained 18,000 volumes. She said the addition will hold 30,000 volumes, but growth will be slower now that the library has met minimum association standards, and a good core of books has been collected. When the addition is completed, stacks will be moved from the second to the first floor, and most of the present second floor will be used for the study carrels. Plans for the new library call for a large multi-purpose room to seat 200 persons. Harlan Stockton, media specialist, pointed out that he will be able to greatly increase the audio-visual collection because his storage and office area will be five times larger than in the past. In addition, there will be more than twice the number of carrels available for students to use audio-visual materials. Plans are being made to have a viewing area where four or five students can use the material at one time.

Film Viewing Handy

Mr. Stockton said nursing classes use a larger number of film strips, and with the equipment available at Motlow, students can come to the library and review film strips and other materials that have been shown in class. Mr. Stockton said he has made several slide sets to be used in

English literature classes, and is in the process of making film on using the card catalogue. Slide presentations have been made on Yeats’ England and Chaucer’s England. “We have real good use of our media,” Mr. Stockton said. The audio-visual room is open during regular college hours from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Friday. Miss Nancy Mielke, assistant librarian, said she is pleased because work on the addition does not disrupt the library. Students in the library will not know construction is in progress unless they notice a plastic wall where the reference room used to be. Reference books are being temporarily housed in Miss Mielke’s office. Mrs. Broemel said the multi-purpose room will be a great boost to Motlow because biology students, can use it for a lecture and then divide into small groups to view slides and have discussions. The addition will make the library an easier place for students to work because all study carrels will be located on the second floor.

Increased Stack Area

The present area for periodicals, and the loan desk, will be moved to the first-floor addition leaving plenty of room for the stacks. Mrs. Broemel said that this summer for the first time, an English instructor required students to include a reference from the New York Times in their term papers. This helped familiarize each student with the library’s microfilm collection and card catalogue. Right now the New York Times is the only newspaper Motlow has on microfilm, but Mrs. Broemel said in the future the library hopes to include The Nashville Tennessean and local papers. In addition, she hopes to expand the number of magazines on microfilm. At present one major journal in each discipline is kept on microfilm. Mr. Stockton said the library also has a “real good” collection of records and transparencies. Mr. Stockton makes transparencies, and he said the production capabilities at Motlow will be greatly enlarged when the addition is completed. Now transparencies, slide sets, and audio-tapes, are frequently made on campus. The school also has the capacity to video-tape happenings, and Mr. Stockton said he is frequently asked by the speech department to tape puppet shows and debates so the students can see themselves as others see them.

HELPS STUDENT- Mrs. Warren Broemel, chief librarian, helps Mrs. Gladys Keith of Huntland, right, selected a magazine from the Motlow library periodicals section. Seated at left is Dr. Don Embry of Murfreesboro who is teaching a Middle Tennessee State University class at Motlow this fall.

PROCESSES BOOKS – Miss Nancy Mielke, assistant librarian, processes books that have been returned to the library. At rear are some of the library’s reference books that are being temporarily housed in her office while construction is under way.
