Motlow College this fall will begin teaching a model, two-year program in aerospace technology, a program launched with the support of the Tennessee Aeronautics Commission.
It is designed to prepare students for careers as pilots, airport managers, aerospace manufacturing and development, and aviation engineering sides.
The State Aeronautics Commission has agreed to provide up to 6930$ or 30 to 40 percent of the program’s cost, for the first year’s operation.
Its contract with the college also calls for the new curriculum’s approach, methods and results to be documented and made available to other interested community colleges.
Bryan Burgess, institutional research director at Motlow and former technology division chairman when the program was being planned, said the new aviation technology degree program formalizes some instruction going on at the community college for two years.
Motlow has been offering aviation courses for the past two years with an approximate enrollment of 85 students.
Mr. Burgess said the new program also was begun on the basis of a survey made early last year by Motlow, which found that about 180 high school seniors in a seven-county chose aviation as one of their first three career choices.
Both the State Board of Education and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission have approved the aerospace technology program.
Included in the curriculum are courses in general aeronautics, flight theory, aviation regulations, aviation weather, navigation, flight instruction, ground safety, flight safety and instrumental flight.
It will also be designed to fit into a four-year program at Middle Tennessee State University
Motlow already has nearly 2000$ worth of classroom equipment provided by the Aeronautics Commission of last year.

The new program leading to an associate of science degree in Aerospace technology is one of eight technology programs at Motlow.
Others are in marketing, accounting, industrial management, secretarial science, general business, computer science and nursing, which will be launched this fall.
Motlow has discontinued an electronics technology program because of lack of student interest. The discontinuance has been approved by the State Board of Education.
