MOORE CO. - Motlow's Lady Bucks welcomed in the new year with a 69-53 win over visiting Volunteer State Thursday at Copperweld Arena..
Bigger than the win itself, though, was the fact that it was the third straight win of the season for the Lady Bucks.
"I was pleased with the way we finished last year," Motlow coach Karen Serra said of the Motlow final two wins in 1998. "If we play smart and with a lot of heart we can do it. "It (the win) was something I was so glad carried over. They went out and hustled and competed. "I was very proud of them." Jumping out early, the Lady Bucks, 6-10 after the win, were able to go to the break up by 11 at 35-24. In the second half, Vol State could pull only as close as nine points as the Motlow women held the pedal to the floor.
Lady Buck post Marie Harper led the way for her side with 15 points. Andrea Patterson and Shelbyville graduate Chandra Gipson popped in 11 apiece for the Lady Bucks. Post Mere McMillan and guard Netta Carter had seven points each for Motlow while Amy Tudor, Terri Henry and
Josie Lowery managed six apiece.
The point differential of the final score was equal to the difference at the free throw line, where the Lady Bucks sank 18-of-28 (64%) compared to 2-of-6 (33%) for the visitors.
Vol State's Katharine Chubb led all scorers with 22

The win was especially sweet since the Lady Bucks fell 67-61
to Vol State right before the win streak. Now, the Lady Bucks get to rest on their laurels until Jan. 20 when Roane State comes to town. Tip off is 5:30 p.m.
