Motlow Debate Team Wins Invitational
Motlow College’s debate team won the sweepstakes trophy Saturday in a novice debate invitational tournament at Maryville College.
Individual debaters also won a first place, a second place and two third places in the tournament, which brought together six teams of freshmen and sophomore debaters from Motlow Maryville, and Union College, Barbourville, Ky.
The trophy presented at a banquet Saturday night at that closed the day-long tournament, was awarded the Motlow team for compiling the most points in debate on both sides of the question of whether national wage and price controls should be established
Edward Brock of Cowan won the “best speaker” trophy at the tournament. Another Motlow debater, Paul Braden of Mcburg community in Lincoln County, won second place in the speaker category and took third place in extemporaneous speaking.
Jerry Manley of Petersburg took third place in oral interpretation. Other Motlow debaters took third place in oral interpretation. Other Motlow debaters taking part were Donna Golden of Tullahoma and Eddie Braden of Mcburg.
The Maryville tournament wound up the first year of activities for the Motlow debaters, organized last fall and couched by Mrs. Warren White, a college English Teacher.
This year, the Motlow debaters have participated in a state tournament at Gatlinburg, a regional event at Paducah Ky., and the recent national junior college forensic tournament at St. Louis.
