Motlow to Award Degrees in First Graduation Friday

Nearly 90 students will receive associate degrees Friday in first graduation exercises at Motlow State Community College. James M. Bomar, former lieutenant governor, speaker of the State House of Representatives for many years and now a prominent Shelbyville attorney, will deliver the commencement address. Ceremonies will begin at 8 p.m. in the Motlow Fieldhouse. The public is invited. The campus in northeast Moore County near Tullahoma may be reached via State Highways 55 or 130. Graduates completing requirements for associate in science or associate in arts degree both this June and in August will take part in the graduation. The graduation procession will include candidates for degrees, dressed in traditional caps and gowns, and members of the Motlow administration and faculty, dressed in academic hoods representing the degrees they hold. Miss Martha Jo Lyne, instructor in music, will play for both the processional and recessional. Dr. Joe B. Johnson, dean of students, will give the invocation, and Dr. Sam H. Ingram, president of Motlow, will introduce Mr. Bomar. At the conclusion of the commencement address, Dr. Don England, dean of instruction, will formally present the members of the class to Dr. Ingram, who will confer the degrees and present diplomas. Motlow’s first graduating class has 29 who are graduating with honors. Two students have earned the top honor designation, summa cum laude, requiring a grade average of 3.75 to 4.0 --- Jean Campbell Edenfield and Nancy Baker Uselton, both of Tullahoma. Five will graduate magna cum laude, which requires an average of 3.5 to 3.74. They are Marthelen Haddock Gray, Sewanee; Nina Reynolds Maurer, Belvidere; Regenia Patrick Bittenhouse, Normandy; and Steven Lee Spence and Bobby Winford Whitlock, both of Tullahoma. Graduating cum laude, with an average of 3.0 to 3.49, are these 22 students: Alice Duckworth Bailey, Jack Randall Eslick, Cynthia Ann McKee, Carole Perotti Maderia, Elizabeth Ann Newby, Linda Young Phillips, Clarence Michael Robison, Gloria Jean Sanders and Howard Kenneth Tucker, Tullahoma; Jackie Murrell Baker, Billy Floyd Elliot, Sandra Faye Elliot, Phillip Dexter McCain and Jeannie Ann Street, Winchester; Gloria Ray Bean, Normandy; Frank Martin Harmon, Eva Massey Thomas and Connie Toms West, Manchester; Joan McCrary Kelton, Shelbyville; Synthia Smith Ray, Lynchburg; Lawrence Michael Stewart, Decherd; and Jerry Wayne Tunstill, Flintville. Mr. Bomar, the graduation speaker, was for many years one of the familiar figures on the legislative scene in Nashville. He was first elected to the General Assembly as direct representative from Bedford County in 1943, but resigned after the legislative session that year to enter the Navy. Returning from military service, he served in the State Senate from 1947 to 1949, then served in the House once again from 1949 to 1951. He was the House speaker from 1952 to 1961, then served as speaker of the State Senate and lieutenant governor in 1963. During the time he was Senate speaker and when he was speaker of the House, Mr. Bomar also headed the State Legislative Council Committee. A native of Raus community not far from the Motlow campus, Mr. Bomar received his law degree at Cumberland University in Lebanon. Here are candidates for degrees, listed by types of degrees and communities.
