Women’s Head Basketball Coach . . . . . . Karen Serra

As the Lady Bucks prepare for the upcoming season, seventh-year head coach Karen Serra is excited about the 2003-2004 women’s squad.
This year’s team consists of 14 players, six returning sophomores, one transfer, and 8 true freshmen. Even though the team is young. Serra believes it will mature quickly to compete in the Eastern Conference with a challenging schedule in place, the Lady Bucks will depend greatly on their inside game. Counting on the depth of post play to carry the team early, the perimeter players will mature and help establish the outside game as the season progresses.
The Lady Bucks will attempt to replace nine quality sophomores who have moved on. From last season, Cassie Reffegee was the only Lady Buck to be selected for the All-Eastern Conference team. This group compiled a record of 40-18 in two seasons at Motlow College.
When the Lady Bucks take the floor on Nov. 1, Serra will begin her 18th year of coaching. She began her career in 1986 in her hometown of Waverly, Tenn., and has coached at various levels within the mid-state area before coming to Motlow
As head coach at Motlow, Serra stresses the importance of academics and has an academic program in place to help ensure that each student-athlete in the program receives adequate assistance in obtaining a degree in physical education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She and husband Johnny live in Murfreesboro.
Helping Serra is sixth-year assistant coach Lenora Word, who concentrates on guard/post development and recruiting.

Men’s Head Basketball Coach . . . . . . . Jeff Johnson
Jeff Johnson, who accepted the Bucks head coaching position late last fall, is returning for his second season as the Bucks leader. In his first season with Motlow, Johnson led the Bucks to an 11-19 record that concluded with a strong tournament showing. After getting off to a 0-4 start, the Bucks seized Johnson’s first career victory against host team Gulf Coast in Florida last November. Johnson managed a 6-10 record against the tough Region VII Eastern Division.
Before coming to Motlow, Johnson has been the head assistant for Angelo State University in Texas. While at Angelo State, Johnson helped put the program on the map with its national recruiting prowess and NCAA Tournament berth. He helped the program go from worst to first and become a power in the Lone Star Conference. Johnson was also an assistant at Iowa Community College preceding his year in the Lee’s Summit school district where he taught secondary health and physical education while coaching basketball and track. His educational background also includes both an undergraduate and graduate degree from Northwest Missouri State University where he played and served as a graduate assistant, along with helping guide the bearcats to the MIAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. In addition to his coaching duties, he will lecture and instruct in the physical education department.
Also assisting with the Bucks will be former standout Desmond Rhodes, who brings a wealth of knowledge to the newcomers. Jimmy Coleman will also be returning with his continued support of the Bucks program. Coach Coleman is both an inspiration and vital part of the team and their involvement in the community.
