Moore County- Secretary of State Bryant Millsaps spoke at the dedication ceremony Friday for the Jeanie Motlow Memorial Reading Room at Motlow College. The reading room, which is located in the Crouch Learning Center, was completed more than a year ago.

The late Mrs. Motlow was the wife of the late Sen. Reagor Motlow, after whom the college was named. The Motlow family gave the 187 acres on which the college is built to the State of Tennessee in 1967, and ground for the first Motlow building was broken in March 1968, with classes beginning in the fall of the following year.

Mrs. Motlow also supported the college throughout her lifetime and bequeathed a 10,000 contribution to the institution.

A video was shown concerning Mrs. Motlow’s contributions to the college, including several remarks from Gov. Ned McWherter, a personal friend of the Motlows.

According to Charlie Coffey, marketing director of Motlow College, Millsaps said the reading room came about because of Mrs. Motlow’s dedication to education and libraries. He challenged everyone to be open to knowledge.

A special guest was Helen Mitchell, Mrs. Motlow’s sister from her hometown of Union City.
