Classroom S242 on the Moore County Motlow College campus was named for Traders National Bank during a recent dedication ceremony at the col- lege, according to Motlow College president Dr. A. Frank Glass.
The classroom naming opportunity honors a $10,000 commitment Traders Bank made last fall to the Motlow College Foundation's Endowment. The Traders National Bank Classroom is located on the second floor of Simon Hall and is marked with a bronze plaque at the room's entrance.
"Officials of Traders Bank have generously supported the college with their attendance at foundation fund-raisers and with monetary gifts," Glass said. "We thank them for their support over the years. This most recent gift brings their total commitment to the college to more than $16,750."
Bennie R. Garrick, Traders Bank president and chief executive officer, said of the bank's support of the college, "We are pleased to have Motlow College as our hometown college and to have the Traders Bank name affiliated with such a quality institution of higher learning. The college has a tremendous impact on the economic and community development of the area."
Travis Hitt is Traders National Bank chairman of the board and C. Ray Copeland is chairman emeritus. Other board
members are Thomas Copeland, Bill Culbertson Jr., Robert G. Graham, Daryl Hammers and David P. Thomas.
The Motlow College Foundation's endowment totals approximately $2 million, with $1.3 of that amount raised through naming opportunities, according to Delene Stone, director of development for the college.
Foundation funds are used for student scholarships, grants, awards and other special college
needs not funded by state appropriations. During the 1997-98 academic year, the foundation was purchased $75,000 in technological classroom equipment and contributed $25,000 for needs-based scholarships, and this year committed $50,000 for scholarships and $50,000 to the college library for the purchase of books and periodicals.

Motlow College's Harlan Stockton shares secrets of irises and hosta with classes
By MARY REEVES Staff Writer
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
"Ode to the West Wind" -Percy Bysshe Shelley
In the midst of the dull, dreary and depressing landscape of winter, one begins to hunt for signs of spring, whether it's the first crocus peeping through dead grasses, or the first gardener clearing out those dead grasses.
For those blessed with green thumbs, the explosion of col- orful blooms that heralds spring begins with planning and work in the winter.
For those who aren't quite sure which end of the trowel goes into the dirt, there is hope. Harlan Stockton, director of media services at Motlow State Community College, will be teaching two garden-oriented community service classes this semester on the Moore County campus.
"This Iris Is for You: Grow- ing the Rainbow Flower" will be offered from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29. "Hosta - A Plant Whose Time Has Ar- rived" will be offered on two
(See SECRETS, Page 4C)
Hosta La Vista
Adding hosta, like this award-winning Yellow River variety, to the garden can turn a humdrum yard into a horticultural show place. Hosta enthusiasts are now breeding some varities for the fragrant blooms.

" Tullahoma News 1-24-99
Secrets
(Starts on Page 1C)
Mondays, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 19 and 26.
"It's something I've done all my life," said Stockton, referring to his garden. "Even when I was a kid I had my own separate garden. I grew things that were different and unique.'
A native of North Carolina, Stockton now lives in Winchester with his wife and daughter. When he isn't at work on the Moore County campus, he's at work in his garden, growing hundreds of varieties of tall bearded iris and hosta.
"About 12 years ago I visited. my brother in Boise, Idaho, and they were in full bloom. Every house out there had irises growing. I brought back some and got hooked," Stockton said. "I * grow approximately 200 irises and I probably have just about every color and shade that's on the market."
Popular Colors
Stockton says the most *; popular colors seem to be the blues, although the bloom voted most popular by the American Iris Society last year was the deep purple, almost black, "Dusky Challenge."
Bi-colored blooms, with their standards and falls of differing colors, also popular. Stockton's own bi-color, "Conjuration," recently won Dykes Medal, the highest national medal in the society, and was featured on the cover of the society's October magazine.
The iris, of course, is the Tennessee state flower, which is not surprising since Nashville was known as the "Iris Capital of the World" in the first part of this century. But the industry eventually migrated to the West Coast, where the climate made for easier growing., Unfortunately, that move created as many growing problems as it solved, problems that Stockton addresses in his class.
"They don't have the same conditions and climate we do here," he said. "As a rule, some varieties do not do well in our climate."
Although Stockton enjoys his rainbow bed of irises, his passion is for hosta, that green leafy plant so often seen forming borders in Middle Tennessee gardens.
"Hosta can be used in so many ways in landscaping," he said. "As edging, as part of a bed, as perennial groundcover... There are approximately 3,000 varieties named. Of those, 1,200 are registered and there are 500 that are distinct and garden-worthy."
Stockton, a self-described "hosta-holic," has about 100 varieties of hosta, all bearing names as unique as their pat- terns, variegation and color - names like "Sum and Substance", "Yellow
River","Seventh Heaven","Night Before Christmas","Strip Tease" and "Guacamole."
Wins Awards
Stockton’s hosta wins awards at the shows as well, with his "Yellow River" taking the President's Cup at a show last year.
Growing irises and hostas is relatively easy, according to Stockton, even for the novice gardener. There are several hardy plants that can survive weather extremes at both ends, as well as the southern humidity. They key and the majority of the cost lies in soil preparation
"As a rule, irises prefer neutral soil," Stockton said. "They can do well in light shade but prefer full sun.' ""
Hostas, on the other hand, prefer shade and can do well with morning sun or light shade. They do not like the hot midday or afternoon sun.
There are several tricks to building successful iris and hosta beds, from keeping the nitrogen content low for the irises to planting other perennials for accents with the hosta. In his classes, Stockton will explain bed preparation, propogation and maintenence.
"There is very low maintenance," he said. "The critical thing is soil preparation."
Other Topics
The other topics his classes will cover include site location, fertilizing, insect control and disease control.
Of course, a major component in gardening is nature, and even the best gardener can be baffled and frustrated by the weather or just the general quirks of the plants themselves. One year, a handful of iris rhyzomes (not bulbs) weren't planted, but just tossed aside beneath a shrub. They not only grew, they bloomed.
"I was ready to quit," said Stockton, recalling his iris bed of last year.
A rainstorm had flattened the plants and a late freeze took the early blooms. Resigned to hav- ing no irises at all, he staked the plants up anyway and was later treated to "one of the most beautiful blooms" he'd ever had. This year, the late warmth of the season supplied another double blooming surprise irises, enjoying a second season of flowering.
"I had tall bearded irises for Christmas," he said.
With the oddities of nature contributing to the mystique of growing things, the average gardener needs all the help he can get in the form of knowledge.
Harlan Stockton is more than happy to supply the know-how

Harlan Stockton is more than happy to supply the know-how
just in time for spring.

Lady Bucks win fourth in a row
By DUANE GRADDY JR. Sports Editor
1999 is shaping up to be the "Year of the Lady Buck" as the Motlow State women have now won four in a row following Wednesday's 68-57 win over conference rival Roane State.
A little over a month ago, the Lady Bucks were 3-10, but have since boosted their mark to 7-10. More important, though, the Moltow women are 1-0 in the Tennessee Junior and Communi- ty College Association standings after Wednesday's win.
And Wednesday, the Lady Bucks were on a rampage, taking a 49-31 lead in the second half, before the Roane Lady Raiderettes chipped away at the advantage, closing the gap to four points with a little more than a minute to go.
(See FOURTH, Page 2B)

"I felt good that we got the lead we did because I was not expecting that," Motlow coach Karen Serra said.
But 10 Motlow free throws down the stretch sealed the deal.
Motlow's Amy Tudor, the team's only sophomore, led all scorers with 22 points, including four treys and a 8-of-9 effort from the charity stripe.
Fellow guards Andrea Pat- terson and Terri Henry poured in 13 and 12 respectively, which was crucial since the Lady Radierettes did an effective job of denying the ball down low
and pounding the glass.
At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the Lady Bucks will be back in action at Chattanooga State in another conference contest. Tuesday, Motlow travels to Hiwassee, and Saturday the Lady Bucks will tip off in Copperweld Arena against Walters State with a tip off time of 2:30 p.m.

Motlow Bucks win first conference game
By DUANE GRADDY JR. Sports Editor
Behind the red-hot shooting of guard Gerrod Shirey, Motlow State took a 21-point lead over visiting Roane State Wednesday before going ice cold and having to stave off a ferocious comeback.
At the final buzzer, the Bucks and the Copperweld faithful could heave a sigh of relief as Motlow took the 82-77 victory. "I hate to get up 20-something with 10 minutes left," Motlow coach Lonnie Thompson said. "It's just human nature to back off."
Going into Saturday's play at Chattanooga State, Motlow is 10-8 overall and 1-0 in TJCCA play after Wednesday's win.
Shirey, who led ell-Harding to the Class A Date championsip last year, was simply on fire Tuesday, hitting 12-of-16 shots from the field, including two treys, and finishing with 30 points to lead all scorers.
After Roane took an 8-4 lead early, Shirey gave his team a

boost with 7 of his total over the next few minutes, which was catalyst for an 11-0 Motlow run, which allowed the Bucks to go to the locker room up 47-31.
Not letting up to start the second half, the Bucks extended he lead to 73-51 with eight minutes to play.
Then, with Shirey on the bench, the Raiders made a run, reeling off 16 unanswered points and holding Motlow scoreless for over five minutes.
Fortunately, down the stretch, the Bucks hit four free throws in the final minute, which was just enough as two Raiders hit two treys in the final 20 seconds to cut the Motlow lead to three.
The Bucks stand at 2-2 in 1999 play, not bad, Thompson said, considering three players left the team during the holiday break.
"The first two losses after the new year, we hadn't made adjustments (to losing the players),' Thompson said. "We're the type of team that has to stick with fundamentals."

Two performances of Shakespeare's comedy 'Twelfth Night' Jan. 26 on Motlow campus
Two performances of William Shakespeare's "A Twelfth Night" will be presented by the National Players at the Motlow College Moore County campus On Jan. 26.
Performances will begin at 12:30 and 7:30 p.m. in Powers
Auditorium in Eoff Hall. There is no admission charge, but reservations are needed for planning purposes. To make reservations call the college at 931-393-1546.
"Twelfth Night" is set in a country called Illyria and is a
masquerade, a play whose title recalls one of those festivals which were dear to Elizabethans. This festival was the day (the 12th day after Christmas) when in every family a king for a day was chosen by lot. Sometimes it fell to a child to be ruler over the whole family. Or, a servant might be chosen to be crowned by his master. It was a world turned
upside down, a topsy-turvy world created by chance, and the
more outlandish the surprise, the merrier the festival.
The play opens when Viola, a highborn young woman, is separated by shipwreck from her twin brother, Sebastian, and each thinks the other is dead. Cast ashore on the coast of Illyria, Viola disguises herself as a boy and enters the service of Duke Orsino. The duke sends her to press his love-suit with the Countess Olivia, who is in mourning and will not receive him. Viola, calling herself Cesario, and now in love with Orsino, succeeds in her mission only in making Olivia fall in love with her under the im- pression that she is a young man.
Viola soon finds herself involved in the jolly domestic intrigue of the countess' household. Malvolio, the steward, has been so arrogant toward the members of Olivia's household, including her irresponsible uncle, Sir Toby Belch, and his foppish companion, Sir Andrew Aguecheck, that Maria, the audacious gentlewoman of Olivia, plots with the others to get the officious steward out of the way. Maria places within his reach
a letter supposedly written by Olivia telling him of her love and admiration for him and advising him to assert himself boldly. Malvolio takes the bait with such abandon that Olivia thinks him mad and the happy conspirators have him locked up.
Matters are soon brought to a head when Olivia openly declares her passion to her page. Sir Andrew is encouraged by Sir Toby to win Olivia's favor by challenging her page (Cesario/Viola) to a duel. Meanwhile, Viola's brother Sebastian arrives in Illyria with Antonio, a sea captain. After they separate, Antonio comes upon the dueling scene. Believing "Cesario" is Sebastian, An- tonio comes to the rescue but is arrested.
Later, Sir Toby mistakes Sebastian for Cesario and challenges him, but before any blood is shed, Olivia appears and takes the befuddled but delighted Sebastian with her. He falls in love and they are married.
When the duke arrives at Olivia's house, the twins are reunited, identities revealed, Malvolio released, and Viola and the duke pledge to wed.
During its 50-year history, the National Players touring theater group has presented approximately 5,500 performances and workshop on plays by Shakespeare, O'Neill, Moliere, Shaw and others. The group has performed in 35 states and 10 foreign countries.

Motlow takes win over St. Catherine's
Even though the Motlow State Bucks led by 12 points at the half, they had to battle back late in the contest Thursday night to come away with a 76-75 win over St. Catherine's of Kentucky.
The Bucks of Coach Lonnie Thompson improved to 9-8 with the victory.
"In the second half, we pushed our lead to 16 points, said Thompson, in his first year at Motlow. "St. Catherine's was a very athletic team and started hitting threes in the second half. (They sank 13 treys, nine of these in the last 20 minutes.)
"They actually led 73-30 and then we we ahead again and they missed a shot with 2.5 seconds left and we won it. I saw them play the night before at Vol State (in Gallatin) and they shot the ball real well."
Motlow had three players in double figures with 21 by Sparta sophomore Matt Holman being tops for the Bucks. Tullahoma freshman Quincy Crutchfield was second in scoring with 16 points. Dominic Tharpe, freshman from Henry County, had 13 and Jerry Robinson, a sophomore from Hazel Green, Ala., third with 10 points.
The game's top scorer was St. Catherine's D. Smith with 29 points, including seven of 11 3-point goals. Teammates L. Evans had 21 and J. Williams 12.
At the half, Motlow led 44-32. The visitors outscored the Bucks in the final 20 minutes 43-32.

Motlow games scheduled
Motlow College's men's basketball team was to have played last night, and the next games for the men's and women's teams are Wednesday.
Roane State will be here with both contests figuring in the Tennessee Junior-Community College Conference standings. The women's contest starts at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game begins at 7:30 p.m.
At the halftime of the men's contest, there will be another attempt at making a mid-court basket. The shot will be worth $2,000 if the shooter nets the ball as the last three attempts have been missed and so the pot has been increased to $2,000.

At selected games a $500 prize is put in the pot for the shooter. Anyone can register during the women's game or right up until halftime of the men's contest. A name will be drawn and that person will have a chance at making the basket and winning the money.
No entry fee is required and the money is made available by Woodard's Diamond Showroom in Northgate Mall, Tullahoma.

Motlow State's Marie Harper (14) drives for 2 of her team-high 15 points past Vol State's Kara Cline in the Lady Bucks' win.
Make it three straight for Motlow's Lady Bucks
By DUANE GRADDY JR. Sports Editor
MOORE CO. - Motlow's Lady Bucks welcomed in the new year with a 69-53 win over visiting Volunteer State Thursday at Copperweld Arena..
Bigger than the win itself, though, was the fact that it was the third straight win of the season for the Lady Bucks.
"I was pleased with the way we finished last year," Motlow coach Karen Serra said of the Motlow final two wins in 1998. "If we play smart and with a lot of heart we can do it. "It (the win) was something I was so glad carried over. They went out and hustled and competed. "I was very proud of them." Jumping out early, the Lady Bucks, 6-10 after the win, were able to go to the break up by 11 at 35-24. In the second half, Vol State could pull only as close as nine points as the Motlow women held the pedal to the floor.
Lady Buck post Marie Harper led the way for her side with 15 points. Andrea Patterson and Shelbyville graduate Chandra Gipson popped in 11 apiece for the Lady Bucks. Post Mere McMillan and guard Netta Carter had seven points each for Motlow while Amy Tudor, Terri Henry and
Josie Lowery managed six apiece.
The point differential of the final score was equal to the difference at the free throw line, where the Lady Bucks sank 18-of-28 (64%) compared to 2-of-6 (33%) for the visitors.
Vol State's Katharine Chubb led all scorers with 22
(See MOTLOW, Page 4B)

The win was especially sweet since the Lady Bucks fell 67-61
to Vol State right before the win streak. Now, the Lady Bucks get to rest on their laurels until Jan. 20 when Roane State comes to town. Tip off is 5:30 p.m.

Motlow loses players, games
By DUANE GRADDY JR. Sports Editor
MOORE CO.- If last two games are any indication, this could be a long spring for Motlow State men's coach Lonnie Thompson.
Over the holiday break, Thompson lost three key players to academics and other reasons, which may be reason for two losses, both at home, to start 1999. Gone are leading scorer Brandon Willie and guards Jovan Firoul and Vaughn Bowie.
Thursday, the Bucks fell to visiting Vol State, a team they had beaten on the road, 76-66. Saturday, the Bucks fell at Copperweld Arena to Aquinas, which puts the Bucks' record at an 8-8.
Thursday, the men host St. Catharine's at Copperweld. Tip off time will be in Wednesday's The News.
Last Thursday versus Vol State, the Bucks led 41-40 at the half, put could not muster much offense in the second half.
"Neither team played really well," Thompson said. "One team decided they wanted to go on and win the game.'
"We're a blue collar team, he added. "We have to overachieve every night. We don't have the talent where we can play half speed or three-quarter speed we just have to overachieve every night or we don't give ourselves a chance.'
After increasing the lead to eight points following halftime, Vol State clawed its way back until a thundering slam dunk by the Pioneers' Luke Brown gave the visitors the lead... for good at 55-54. Wilson added 6 of his 10 points in the final six minutes of play as Vol State went on a 9-0 run down the stretch.
Big Donald Elder controlled the paint for Vol State as he shoveled in 21 points, all down low. Vol State's Antwan Stephens led all scorers with 26.
Matt Holman and John Carter led Motlow with 12 points, followed by Jerry Robinson and Dominic Tharpe with 11 a piece.
Saturday at Copperweld, the Bucks lost a heartbreaker to visiting Aquinas 65-61. At the half, Motlow trailed by one at 28-27.
Point guard Errick McFarland was the sole Motlow player in double figures with 10.
Marshall Hyler led four Aquinas players in double digits
with 15.
Motlow had its chances down the stretch as Aquinas could manage just 8-of-17 from the free throw line.
