The Motlow Bucks had a super 1976 regular season with a 35-9 worksheet, a record number of wins for the team. The name of the game was speed, topped-off by a team record of 162 stolen bases, and an individual single season record of 29 steals by Jim Harrison. The team batting average was a very respectable .300, and the ERA was 2.17.
Along with the team’s colossal number of wins, numerous individuals records were established. Tom Nichting made an outstanding showing with 5 record breakers. Tom’s records included the most triples from a single season, 5; the most triples for two seasons, 6; the most RBI’s for one season, 35; the most RBI’s for two seasons, 63; and the most runs scored in a single season, 35. Mike McGill set a record for most doubles in a season, 11.
Randall Wilson and Jerry Farrar each eclipsed the old mark for strike-outs over a two-year period with 77 for wilson and 75 for Farrar. Ronnie Kelly tied the mark for the best record in a season with 6-0; and thus established the best record over two seasons with eight wins and no losses.
The season consisted of tough, close games throughout the year. Truly, the 1976 Motlow Baseball team is one that all the students and faculty of the college can be proud of, now and in the future years to come.
